The old Cayce Red Lobster is under construction. What’s taking its place?

Construction is underway on Knox Abbott Drive in Cayce, at what used the old Red Lobster.

The restaurant at 1270 Knox Abbott Drive closed in August 2024, and came amid the restaurant chain’s bankruptcy and hundreds of other closures across the country. A new primary care facility will take its place. As of Monday, a reporter observed that work was still being done, but much of the outside fixtures have made progress.

The Medical University of South Carolina is building a primary care facility. MUSC spokesperson Kristin Merkel told The State that the location will be 8,364 square feet, with the ability to accommodate four providers.

The building was sold in late 2025 for more than $1.9 million, according to a release from real estate company NAI.

“MUSC Health chose Cayce for our next primary care location to better serve this rapidly growing area,” Merkel previously told The State. “Its close proximity to downtown Columbia and the continued growth of Cayce and West Columbia make it an ideal location to expand access to exceptional primary care.”

The primary care facility is anticipated to open by September 2026.
