Chevy's New Corvette Grand Sport Is Already Eating Into Stingray Sales
The Hype is There
General Motors is adjusting its sports-car assembly strategy as early production data for the 2027 Corvette reveal a clear shift in consumer preferences. The Bowling Green Assembly Plant is currently closed for its annual summer shutdown following the July 4th holiday. However, the first three weeks of assembly since the June 8th launch show that buyers are increasingly selecting higher-performance, premium variants over the entry-level model.
The new Grand Sport has already been spotted in the wild as dealerships prepare for initial deliveries. The launch data suggest that Chevrolet successfully captured distinct market segments by structuring the vehicle into a highly diverse lineup. Production schedules reflect this priority, moving higher-margin trims down the line to satisfy current order banks.
Production and Market Details
Based on assembly tracker data, workers built 1,689 Corvettes in total before the holiday pause. The Stingray remains the absolute volume leader at 719 units, but the new Grand Sport follows closely at 590 units. This initial run gives the Grand Sport a 34.9 percent share of total 2027 production, driven largely by interest in its newly developed massive V8 engine option.
The remaining production consists of 241 Z06 models, 91 standard ZR1 units, and 48 top-tier ZR1X variants. High-end configurations now represent nearly a quarter of total output, indicating that buyers are comfortable absorbing the added expense of premium carbon-fiber components. Market demand has consistently favored high-performance specifications over base configurations during this product cycle.
These figures represent a substantial change from the 2026 model year, when the entry-level Stingray dominated production with a 62 percent market share. The Stingray has dropped to 42.5 percent of the build mix as consumer interest shifts upward. Concurrently, the flagship ZR1X increased its share compared to last year, and the track-oriented Grand Sport X variant is scheduled to begin regular assembly later this month.
TheLowdown
The current production distribution is a financial win for General Motors. Engineering a vehicle that provides displacement upgrades with virtually no penalty to baseline fuel economy removed the primary deterrent for buyers considering an upgrade. Chevrolet is delivering high-output internal combustion engines on a wide-body platform that yields significantly higher per-vehicle profit margins.
The data proves the modern Corvette buyer is moving past the budget-car label. The brand has successfully transitioned from a domestic value proposition into a premium sports car line that justifies six-figure transactions. If these assembly percentages hold steady through the remainder of the model year, the Grand Sport will stand as the primary catalyst for the platform's financial growth.
