The three months since Rosewood Florist closed have been awful, said the business’s original owner.

Charles Russell and his wife, Mary, had devoted their lives to the flower shop, starting the business in 1978. They now are selling the building that had housed Rosewood Florist since 1986.

“Our names were synonymous with Rosewood Florist,” Russell said, adding it was heartbreaking to know the business they had built from scratch had closed.

Russell sold the floral business to an employee in 2008 but still owned the building. However, after several years, the company began a downward spiral, he said. Russell evicted the new owners in December, he said. “It’s just been really, really devastating.”

Former customers have missed the business, including Stephie Bridgers, owner of a nearby coffee shop, The Local Buzz. “They’ve always been a staple,” said Bridgers, who ordered her wedding flowers from Rosewood Florist in 1999.

Bridgers said her family often used the florist for life events and buying flowers for friends.

For now, Russell is waiting for the Rosewood Drive property to sell. Then, he plans on enjoying retirement.
