Construction has begun on a luxury hotel that will be just a block from Clemson’s Death Valley, according to the developer.

Called “The Abernathy at Clemson,” the 41-unit facility will feature “convenient parking, a welcoming lobby, cozy fireplace, breakfast service and a well-appointed bar area for gathering after work or simply watching an away game,” according to a statement from Tom Winkopp Realtor/Developer, LLC.

“The Abernathy at Clemson is a Tiger fan’s dream come true,” Winkopp said. “We are excited to open a luxury hotel so close to campus, athletic events and downtown Clemson. Nothing can top this level of year-round hospitality convenience.”

It is named in honor of the late Larry Abernathy, long-time mayor of Clemson, according to Emily Holland of Martin Holland Advertising.

The hotel will be at the intersection of Williamston Road and Old Greenville Highway, “Literally, a block from the Rock,” she said, referring to Howard's Rock at the stadium.

That’s the site where Elkmont Trading Post and a Soap N Suds business used to be, she said.

The site is being leveled now, with opening projected for late this year or early 2017, she said.

The hotel will include single bedroom accommodations and two-bedroom, one-bath suites with a kitchen and living room area for large groups or families.

Several of the units are available on a rent/purchase basis, according to Winkopp.

The property will be managed by Charlestowne Hotels.
