Michelin planning distribution center in Spartanburg County
Michelin and a California-based development firm are seeking tax breaks from Spartanburg County to build a distribution center.
County officials have been discussing tax incentives with Michelin and Panattoni Development Co. of Newport Beach, Calif., for the center, according to Spartanburg County Council documents. The project is expected to create “a substantial number” of new jobs over the next five years.
The county council has given initial approval to the agreement.
Michelin and Panattoni have asked the county to “assist in the acquisition, construction and installation of land, buildings, improvements, fixtures, machinery and equipment” to create “a substantial number of new, full-time jobs” by the fifth year of the project, according to the agreement.
“It is definitely Michelin, no doubt about it,” County Councilman David Britt said. “We are very excited. It is a great announcement. We had to compete for it.”
Britt declined to provide additional details.
State and local officials declined to discuss details of the project.
Panattoni officials also could not be reached. The company says it has developed more than 250 million square feet of industrial, office and retail space in nearly 280 cities.
