People & achievements: USC hires former NBA, NHL executive

Susan O’Malley, the former president and CEO of Washington Sports and Entertainment and the Washington Wizards NBA franchise, will join the University of South Carolina’s Department of Sport and Entertainment as a senior instructor. O’Malley, who at 29 became the first female president of an NBA franchise, also is the former president of the Washington Capitals NHL franchise and the Washington Mystics WNBA franchise. She helped shape the Washington region’s professional sports landscape at Washington Sports and Entertainment, which owned the Verizon Center and the Wizards. O’Malley will begin teaching at the University of South Carolina in August. She will teach courses in entertainment management and sport and entertainment law.
