New coffee house and book shop opens in Lexington

Second Wave Coffee & Books is not your typical coffee house.

For starters, it pulls double duty as a book store.

But the biggest difference between Second Wave and a traditional coffee shop is that Second Wave is an Arc of the Midlands employment initiative that provides employment opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“Second Wave Coffee & Books exists to create a community with and for individuals with disabilities to work and learn valuable skills for life. Second Wave employs adults with disabilities and provides assessment, skill development and supported employment in the retail setting,” Second Wave’s Facebook page states.

Second Wave is located at 529 S. Lake Drive in Lexington and is open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday; closed Saturday and Sunday.
