Longtime Midlands health network is changing its name as it continues to expand
In a sign of just how far it has grown from its roots 50 years ago, Lexington Medical Center announced a new name for its expansive medical network on Friday.
The health system will now be known as Lexington Health, reflecting the growth of its services beyond its West Columbia hospital campus.
“Our commitment to our communities remains the same,” said hospital system CEO Tod Augsburger in a statement. “Lexington Health will continue to offer the most advanced medicine and highest quality care to our friends, families and neighbors now and in the future.”
When it opened as the Lexington County Hospital in 1971, the hospital had 125 beds and 250 employees, Lexington Health said in a statement. Today, Lexington Health boasts a 607-bed teaching hospital, six community medical and urgent care centers, nearly 80 physician practices and more than 9,000 health care professionals.
While its main hospital will continue to be called Lexington Medical Center, the names of its various practices will soon transition to the “Lexington Health” branding. Patients will notice changing signage and materials over the next two years. The website LexMed.com will become LexHealth.com in September, the hospital said.
