SC Gov. McMaster to out of state visitors: self-quarantine upon arrival
If visiting the Palmetto State for more than two days, Gov. Henry McMaster hopes you will keep to yourself for a couple of weeks after arriving.
“Today, I am requesting all out of state visitors to South Carolina planning a stay of two or more nights (to) self quarantine for two weeks immediately upon arrival,” McMaster tweeted on Wednesday.
Residents from places such as New York and Illinois may have second residences in South Carolina where they stay for long periods of time. Those states, however, have thousands of cases of the coronavirus. South Carolina has 424 cases, as of Wednesday afternoon.
Brian Symmes, a spokesman for the governor, said McMaster’s statement comes after the office heard concerns from coastal area elected officials about people traveling from other parts of the country with higher impacts of COVID-19.
Symmes reiterated McMaster’s statement was a request.
“We have to rely on South Carolinians who are coming here as visitors to act responsibly during a time like this,” Symmes said.
Another southern state governor has similar concerns.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis recently issued an executive order for any visitors from New Jersey, New York and Connecticut visiting the Sunshine State to self-quarantine for 14 days.
