SC DMV switches to appointment only system, closes offices across the state

The S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles will be using a reservation system to see some customers who need road tests or other DMV services as the coronavirus continues to spread, according to a statement from the department.

The new appointment system went into place Monday, and a link to the reservation system is available at SCDMVonline.com. Residents without internet access can call 803-896-5000 to schedule an appointment.

Appointments will be scheduled two weeks in advance, according to a statement from the Motor Vehicles agency. A DMV employee will try to reach out to customers to confirm which documents they need for their appointment. Employees will also see if what customers can be served online.

“We are implementing an appointment reservation system that will benefit our customers greatly by guaranteeing them a time with one of our customer service representatives,” SCDMV Director of Branch Services Courtney Saxon said. “This will eliminate lines and waiting at our branch offices which will assist employees and customers in adhering to social distancing recommendations.”

The Department of Motor Vehicles has also resumed motorcycle skills testing and commercial driver’s license testing by appointment only.

“We understand the importance of commercial trucking to our state and our nation, and we are doing what we can to keep truckers on the road to deliver vital supplies,” DMV Executive Director Kevin Shwedo said. “Our ability to license commercial motor vehicle drivers impacts everything we do, from getting gasoline delivered to putting products on shelves in groceries stores.”

The DMV has also adjusted the days local offices will be open and which offices are open. At least one office in each county will remain open, according to the statement.

Offices with the most traffic will be open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, while other offices that remain open will be available to complete services on Mondays and Fridays. Some offices will only be open on Wednesdays.
