SC Juvenile Justice seeks masks to protect youth, staff from threat of coronavirus

The South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice is looking for donations for its staff and youth detainees to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

The youth corrections agency is looking for facial masks for its 1,400 employees and 3,500 youth it serves throughout the state. The department says it will accept all types of masks, whether N95, surgical or homemade to help meet the need.

Anyone that can donate masks can contact DJJ Resource Development Manager Deborah Lakin-Egleton at (803) 760-8262 or maskdonations@djj.sc.gov.

On Monday, the S.C. Emergency Management Department also expressed the need for protective equipment for its personnel. SCEMD Director Kim Stinson said at Monday’s briefing that the department has activated its donated goods system for COVID-19, similar to what is used during hurricanes and floods.

Stinson said the department is in need of gloves, gowns, face shields, N95 respirator masks and hand sanitizer. Pre-sorted items on pallets are preferred.

Donations can be coordinated by calling (803) 737-8518. Monetary donations can be made to the One SC Fund at https://yourfoundation.org/impact-initiatives/one-sc-fund/.
