‘Stay tuned’: McMaster sets COVID-19 briefing after promising update on SC reopenings

Gov. Henry McMaster is scheduled to hold a news conference at 4 p.m. Friday with health officials one day after he told reporters to “stay tuned” for possible reopenings.

The governor’s office declined to comment on what would be discussed during the afternoon news conference.

The news conference comes one day after McMaster said he would have news “soon” on when restaurants may allow people to eat at their establishments, rather than being limited to takeout and delivery, amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Pressure is mounting on the governor to lift some of his restrictions, allowing some businesses to reopen even at reduced capacities. The South Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association has asked the governor to allow restaurants to offer outdoor seating by Monday. However, the group also recommended there be rules for strict social distancing.

The Irmo City Council on Thursday voted to allow restaurants to offer outdoor seating starting on Friday.

A livestream of the news conference is planned on scetv.org. Once a link goes live, you can watch it here. Check back soon.
