Richland 2 schools now offering free weekend meals for hungry students
Richland 2 school district is now offering free weekend meals for hungry students, the district announced this week.
The meals will be available until the end of the school year, and all students in the district will be eligible to receive the meals, whether or not they receive free and reduced lunch, according to a news release.
Those who use the program will pick up the meals on Friday and will get six meals at a time — two each for Friday, Saturday and Sunday —per child from the established school sites, said Richland 2 spokeswoman Ishmael Abdus-Saboor.
Students must be under the age of 18 to receive the meals, the release said.
The school district is able to offer these meals because it received a waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to expand the emergency feeding program to the weekends, the release said.
“Right now we are set to feed students through the end of the school year, but we are working on a plan and are hopeful that we will be able to continue providing meals throughout the summer,” Jeff Clarke, the district’s food services operations manager, said in the release.
Meals will be available for pick up from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. from the following locations:
- Bethel-Hanberry Elementary
- Bridge Creek Elementary
- Dent Middle
- Joseph Keels Elementary
- Killian Elementary
- Longleaf Middle
- LW Conder Elementary
- North Springs Elementary
- Polo Road Elementary
- Pontiac Elementary
- Rice Creek Elementary
Richland 2 isn’t the only school district to offer weekend meals. Lexington 2 has been offering weekend meals, according to the district’s website.
