US military won’t accept recruits who survive COVID-19, Pentagon confirms

As the U.S. military navigates the coronavirus pandemic, recruits who test positive for COVID-19 won’t be allowed to enlist — regardless of whether they’ve recovered or not.

A Department of Defense memo posted on social media announced the change, which was confirmed by officials to multiple media outlets.

“During the medical history interview or examination, a history of COVID-19, confirmed by either a laboratory test or a clinician diagnosis, is permanently disqualifying,” the memo from the U.S. Military Entrance Processing Command (MEPCOM) states.

A Pentagon spokesperson told the Military Times, which first reported the news, that the memo is “authentic.” Newsweek reported it was “interim guidance,” also citing the Pentagon, and a DOD official confirmed it with Fox News.

According to the memo, all 65 Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS) will be required to screen for COVID-19 — including taking temperatures and asking about symptoms and potential exposure, Newsweek reported.

Those who fail the screening but haven’t tested positive for the virus will be allowed to return 14 days later, the memo states.

Anyone who tests positive can also return, but not for 28 days after their diagnosis. According to the memo, they should bring supporting medical documentation, such as clinical notes, treatment and prognosis. But their application will be marked “Considered Disqualifying.”

The Military Times reported the Pentagon spokesperson declined to comment on why the coronavirus was “permanently disqualifying.” But those recruits can apply for a waiver — similar to what other applicants with disqualifying conditions receive from their respective branches, the Times reported.

“However, without any further guidance for exceptions dealing with COVID-19, a review authority would have no justification to grant a waiver,” according to the Times.

As of May 5, Air Force Magazine reported more than 7,600 cumulative cases of COVID-19 among military personnel, civilians, dependents and contractors in the U.S. Department of Defense.
