DHEC announces more than a dozen new coronavirus testing clinics in Midlands

South Carolina’s Department of Health and Environmental Control will have more than a dozen new pop-up clinics and mobile testing sites for the COVID-19 over the next several weeks, it announced Tuesday.

DHEC said in a news release that all of the clinics will be free and that more will be announced in the coming days, “especially in rural and underserved communities where residents may have limited access to health care.”

Gov. Henry McMaster and state health officials have promised to ramp up the state’s testing capacity dramatically in the next few months. South Carolina currently ranks near the bottom of the country in tests conducted per capita, but McMaster and DHEC have said they plan to administer 110,000 tests per month in May and June, including tests for all residents and workers in nursing homes.

DHEC had already announced free clinic locations this past Sunday, focused mainly in the Charleston area. The newest round announced Tuesday centered mostly around the Midlands, with the State Fairgrounds in Columbia as a main testing site. The fairgrounds will host mobile clinics seven times from May 15 to May 30.
