Coronavirus live updates: Here’s what to know in South Carolina on May 25

Latest cases

At least 10,178 people in South Carolina have tested positive for the coronavirus as of Monday afternoon, and 440 have died, according to state health officials.

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control on Mondayreported 90 new cases and five deaths.

The additional deaths were in “Chesterfield, Darlington, Florence, Lexington and Horry counties,” The State reported.

As of Sunday, 171,034 people in the state had been tested for the virus, up from 168,908 reported the day before, according to health officials.

Coronavirus hot spots

Richland and Greenville counties remain hot spots for COVID-19 infections in South Carolina.

On Monday, seven additional cases were reported in Richland, home to Columbia. Fourteen new cases were reported in Greenville County.

A total of 1,366 cases have been reported in Richland County, but health officials estimate there could be as many as 9,757 cases. Greenville County has reported 1,300 positive cases, and officials estimate there could be as many as 9,286 infections.

Holiday weekend at the beach

Visitors made the trek to the coast for Memorial Day weekend as coronavirus-related restrictions loosen.

Myrtle Beach officials anticipated 75% to 100% occupancy over the holiday weekend, MyrtleBeachOnline reported, and increased police presence on Ocean Boulevard on Friday and new traffic patterns kept things “mostly tamed.”

Few people were seen wearing masks, but sidewalks remained spacious enough.

Several people were injured in a shooting early Sunday morning near Ocean Boulevard and 12th Avenue North. police said.

The holiday weekend comes as the area continues to see an increase in coronavirus cases. Horry County reported six new cases Sunday and 11 on Saturday.
