Coronavirus live updates: Here’s what to know in South Carolina on June 8

Cases top 14,000

At least 14,286 people in South Carolina have tested positive for the coronavirus and 546 have died, according to state health officials.

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported an additional 390 cases and one additional death on Sunday. The death was reported in Darlington County.

More than 7 million cases of the virus and 403,000 deaths have been reported worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University. In the United States, more than 1.9 million positive cases and 110,000 deaths have been reported.

Record cases over the weekend

On Saturday, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported 512 new cases of the virus — the highest single-day total reported in the state since the start of the pandemic.

Health officials also reported an additional seven deaths Saturday.

Saturday was one of two days last week in which more than 400 daily cases were reported. More than 300 daily cases were reported three times last week.

Officials have acknowledged that COVID-19 activity has been increasing in South Carolina, The State reported Sunday. The seven-day average of daily cases has been increasing along with the percentage of tests coming back positive.
