USC posts latest coronavirus cases on campus for Sept. 29

The University of South Carolina has updated its count of coronavirus cases on campus.

As of Tuesday, USC is reporting 33 total cases on campus.

This is the lowest number of cases USC has had on campus since classes resumed. The sinking number of active cases comes after several weeks of decreasing case numbers. USC hasn’t posted a double-digit number of new cases since Tuesday, Sept. 22, according to the school’s online dashboard.

The campus alert level, a composite score of case numbers, testing and quarantine capacity, coronavirus’ impact on day-to-day operations and more, describes the coronavirus risk on USC’s campus as “new normal,” the least severe designation.

Since school began Aug. 20, the peak number of reported active cases has been 1,461 on Sept. 3, according to USC’s online dashboard.

The lion’s share of those cases have been students. Between Aug. 1 and Sept. 24, 98.3% of all COVID-19 cases on USC’s campus has been students, according to the dashboard.

Though case numbers have been declining, USC officials have urged students who are suffering from COVID-19 symptoms to get tested. Between Friday and Monday, 851 people had been tested, compared to 1,603 between last Tuesday and Thursday, data show.
