27 states with the most Planned Parenthood clinics

One of the more contentious debates in the 2016 presidential race has revolved aroundPlanned Parenthood, a nonprofit organization that provides reproductive health services.

On the Republican side, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has taken a hardline stance, arguing the organization should be completely defunded. Meanwhile, businessman Donald Trump has suggested Planned Parenthood be defunded if it maintains its abortion practice, but praised the organization for some of its other services. On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton received an endorsement from Planned Parenthood, while Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders came under fire for calling the organization "part of the establishment."

Regardless, it’s clear the debate over Planned Parenthood will continue throughout the primaries and into the general election. With that in mind, InsideGov decided to take a broader look at the current state of Planned Parenthood in the U.S.

Using 2013 state population data and numbers from Planned Parenthood's health center locator, InsideGov found the 27 states with the highest number of Planned Parenthood clinics per capita (by million people). Since this calculation considers population, less populated states like Wyoming and Alaska made the list, even though they have relatively few clinics. And California, which has the largest number of Planned Parenthood clinics in the U.S., doesn’t top this list because of its population size.

Overall, states in the West or Northeast tend to have higher concentrations of Planned Parenthood clinics, while Southern states have lower concentrations. Note that these figures only consider Planned Parenthood clinics; other family planning clinics may exist in each state. In the event of a tie, states are listed by the total number of Planned Parenthood clinics.
