Columbia firefighters honored for rescue work in last fall’s flood

Columbia firefighters have been honored for rescues made in last fall’s floods.

The award was given by the International Association of Water Rescue Professionals for the response of firefighters Oct. 4 -5 to dangers created by record rain in the Midlands.

It recognizes training, skill and teamwork instead of heroism in saving people trapped in rapidly rising water, Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins said Friday.

City firefighters were one of three agencies across the nation to receive the award.
