Columbia prison on lockdown after fatal stabbing
Broad River Correctional Institution was locked down Sunday after an inmate was killed.
Clifford Haltiwanger, 33, was stabbed and killed outside of his dormitory Saturday at the prison.
Haltiwanger died from a stab wound to the abdomen, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said. Haltiwanger was pronounced dead at 4:40 p.m. at Palmetto Health Richland.
Haltiwanger was serving a 30-year prison sentence for trafficking methamphetamines. He had 27 years left on his sentence.
Haltiwanger was attacked by another inmate, possibly multiple inmates, at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Department of Corrections spokesman Josh Gelinas said in a news release.
Gelinas said the prison has been locked down, meaning inmates are restricted to their cells. Visitation for Sunday was canceled.
The State Law Enforcement Division is assisting in the investigation.
