Why is Columbia smoky?

The smoke that clouded much of Columbia on Thursday was due to a controlled burn at Fort Jackson.

“Just a little one,” wrote fort spokesman Pat Jones. “133 acres.”

The fort often does controlled burns to manage timber and knock down undergrowth on the 52,000 Army installation, the nation’s largest basic training base.

It is also home to Camp McCrady, a South Carolina National Guard training facility, the national Drill Sergeant Academy and the U.S Army Chaplaincy School and Center.
