Localized flash flooding will be possible Tuesday as bands of heavy rain make their way through the area in the afternoon and evening hours.

No widespread flooding or severe weather is expected, but forecasters say showers will continue through Tuesday morning with a greater chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening hours.

“We’re expecting just general thunderstorms to develop as the afternoon goes by,” said Al Moore, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Columbia. “Heavy rain is still a possibility because of the high atmospheric moisture in place.”

The chances for heavy rain and thunderstorms will be higher after 2 p.m., Moore said. Areas caught under any slow-moving storms could see localized flash flooding, but Moore said forecasters don’t anticipate any widespread flooding.

There will be another chance for heavy rain between 10 p.m. Tuesday and 3 a.m. Wednesday, Moore said.

There are no watches or warnings in effect for the area as of Tuesday morning.

Highs on Tuesday will be around 85 degrees, Moore said. Mostly cloudy skies will linger Wednesday, along with scattered showers and possible thunderstorms. Highs will be around 80 degrees.

Thursday will bring partly sunny skies and highs in the low 80s, Moore said.
