Maybe it was was the first official weekend of spring weather, maybe it the beer, or maybe it was the spuds – people do like their potatoes, we suppose.

Whatever it was, it drove Columbians en masse to Main Street on Saturday morning for the “Suds and Spuds” kickoff of Soda City Suds week, celebrating craft beer in the Capital City.

Local breweries River Rat, Conquest and Swamp Cabbage as well as Lexington winery Mercer House Estate provided libations for the extra-festive version of the weekly downtown market.

Beer and wine – or lemonade or a nice handcrafted natural soda – were just right for washing down special potato-themed food offerings, such as potato dumplings and potato cinnamon buns(?!), along with weekly market staples, including kettle corn, waffles, grits and produce from local vendors.
