South Carolina 15-year-old drowns swimming in cove

A 15-year-old boy drowned on Lake Keowee Sunday.

Dillon Ray Spears, 15, of Wellford in Spartanburg County, was identified as the drowning victim by Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis.

Spears was recovered by a dive team member at approximately 10:30 a.m. at Fall Creek Landing, Salem in a water depth of 19 feet and approximately 30 to 40 yards off shore, Addis said.

The rising sophomore at Byrnes High School and a friend reportedly were attempting to swim a cove and Spears appeared to be swimming back toward their point of entry when he went under, according to Addis.

EMS attempted CPR on Spears, who was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:54 a.m. said Addis, who said that no autopsy will be ordered and the manner of death is classified as accidental.

District Five Schools of Spartanburg County superintendent Dr. Scott Turner released a statement.

“The District Five family is heartbroken over the loss of yet another student this year. Dillon is remembered fondly by former teachers and will be greatly missed. Our hearts and prayers are with his family,” Turner said in the statement.

Counselors will be on hand at the Freshman Academy, where Spears recently completed the ninth grade, Monday if needed.
