West Columbia to resume demolition of Mill Village home
West Columbia got the go-ahead Wednesday to resume razing a Mill Village home after a brief delay, City Councilman Tem Miles said.
Demolition stopped after some neighborhood residents asked state officials Tuesday to review the work.
The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control gave its OK after checking over the project, Miles said.
Miles represents the Mill Village and adjoining neighborhoods.
It’s uncertain how soon demolition can resume, city spokeswoman Anna Huffman said.
Some Mill Village residents want to save the century-old homes they consider a piece of local history. The homes were built for workers in long-closed textile mills.
No one accepted offers to acquire the homes free because of the high cost of moving them, city officials have said.
City officials bought a block with five rental homes on the north edge of the neighborhood to provide more parking for recreation on the Congaree River.
The new parking area is slated to be ready for use when concerts at the riverfront amphitheater resume this fall.
