Driver killed Wednesday night in Fernandina Road collision

The driver of a 2003 Toyota 2-door car was killed Wednesday night in a 2-vehicle crash on Fernandina Road in Lexington County.

The collision occurred around 9 p.m. on Fernandina Road near the intersection with Piney Grove Road, said Lance Cpl David Jones of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The Toyota was traveling south on Fernandina when it crossed the center lane and ran off the left side of the road. The driver over-corrected back into the roadway where the Toyota was struck on the passenger side by a 2006 Dodge truck which was traveling north on Fernandina Road.

The driver of the Toyota, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was entrapped in the vehicle and declared dead on scene, Jones said. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries, Jones said.

The accident remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
