Voters in Springdale, Gilbert head to polls Tuesday

Voters in the Springdale area and in Gilbert go to the polls Tuesday to settle two different questions.

Residents of four neighborhoods on the north side of Springdale will decide whether they want to join the Lexington County town. The square-mile area is home to about 1,000 people and about 70 businesses.

Some homeowners there want better police and trash service they say will come through annexation. Others don’t like the property tax increases the step would produce.

Officials in neighboring West Columbia urged the area to look their way, promising a better deal if Springdale is rebuffed.

Meanwhile, voters in Gilbert will select from among three candidates to fill a pair of Town Council posts.

The nonpartisan race features incumbent Donnie Cason, Nancy Harmon and Fred Taylor. Harmon is the wife of a retiring councilman and member of a town zoning appeals panel, while Taylor is town zoning administrator.

There are separate polling places in each area, with both open 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

The one for the Springdale annexation referendum is Central Church of the Nazarene, 100 S. Woodside Parkway. In Gilbert, it’s at the Gilbert-Summit Activities Center, 411 Broad St.
