It’s snowing in South Carolina!

Parts of the Upstate already reported small snowfalls, according to multiple media reports. Fox Carolina was live streaming a snow fall in Henderson County on Friday. And users have already submitted pictures of snowfall to the station.

For now in Columbia and the Midlands, it’s just raining. And the front that moved over the Southeast coast will continue to dump rain on the area through Saturday.

But what are the chances that the rain will turn into snow? Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Columbia say “it’s not out of the question.”

“A little more snow than forecast is not out of the question but confidence is reasonably high no significant impacts will occur given relatively warm ground temperatures,” forecasters said in a Friday afternoon update.

Models suggest that by Friday night, the northern parts of the Midlands and Piedmont could get a “wintry mix of snow and rain.” Temperatures could fall to the upper 30s by Saturday morning.

A mix of snow and rain, or light snow is possible through Saturday morning but little will accumulate, according to the Friday forecaster’s discussion. Though Saturday will kick off cloudy, it will become mostly sunny, taking another chance of snow with it.

Sunday’s high is expected the mid 40s, and by Monday, the high will be in the mid 50s.

The Charlotte area could see up to two inches of snow, with accumulation in Rock Hill expected to be less than an inch. The mountains of North Carolina could get six to eight inches of snow.

Main Street ICE, the city of Columbia’s outdoor ice skating rink, closed Friday because of the rainy weather.
