Midlands high school student charged with punching another pupil
A 19-year-old Sumter High School student has been charged with punching a fellow student in a hallway confrontation, authorities said Friday.
Nason Samuel Smith is charged with third-degree assault and battery and disturbing schools in the 10:30 a.m. Thursday attack on an 18-year-old male student, according to Sumter Police Department spokeswoman Tonyia McGirt.
The younger teenager confronted Smith after a female student complained to him that Smith called her a name, police said in a news release.
The 18-year-old did not fight back after he was struck in the face, police reported.
Smith was released from the Sumter-Lee jail on a $1,000 bond, police said. He faces up to 30 days in jail if convicted.
