Coroner IDs driver killed in Richland County crash early Sunday

A Hopkins was killed after being ejected from a car when it crashed in Richland County early Sunday, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on Cabin Creek Road near Congaree Road, according to Lance Cpl. Matt Southern of the Highway Patrol.

Mathew R. Butler, 39, of Deerhurst Court in Hopkins, died of blunt trauma to the head and neck, according to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.

Butler was traveling west on Cabin Creek Road in a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe when the SUV went off the right side of the roadway, Southern said. Butler overcorrected, sending the vehicle off the left side of the roadway and causing it to overturn.

Butler, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected, Southern said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
