Former Columbia Mayor Bob Coble’s condition is said to be improving following a heart attack and quadruple coronary bypass surgery last week.

Coble’s son Daniel said through a spokesman that his father’s vital signs are improving and the family is encouraged by the progress he has made in the past two days. However, he said his father’s heart attack was major and “we know that his road to recovery will be a long one.”

“Our family asks everyone to keep the well wishes and prayers coming as medical professionals continue to provide around-the-clock care for ‘Mayor Bob,’” Coble said Monday in a statement released by Kevin Floyd, a spokesman for the Nexsen Pruet law firm where Coble works. The family asked that no one visit the former mayor at this time so he can rest and recover.

Floyd said Coble was in the Intensive Care Unit on Monday.

Coble, 60, was rushed to Providence Hospital from the State House, where he was working as a lobbyist, Wednesday afternoon. Doctors performed quadruple bypass surgery Wednesday night and into Thursday morning.

Coble served as mayor from 1990 to 2010.
