Family of five rescued after getting lost in Congaree National Park

Columbia Fire Department

A family of five was rescued by first responders late Tuesday evening after they reported themselves lost while canoeing in the Congaree National Park.

Brick Lewis, a Columbia Fire Department spokesman, said several agencies including U.S. Park Rangers were dispatched to the park at 6 p.m. after the family, made up of two adults and three kids – ages 10, 12 and 15 – called 911.

Lewis said because the signal strength in the park Tuesday evening was strong, the family was able to make the call to 911.

Lewis said 16 first responders conducted the search by using kayaks and on foot through the park. Due to heavy flooding, the search on water became difficult with unpredictable currents and large debris. Rescuers were able to locate the family at 9:30 p.m. of searching by using audible sounds.

There were no injuries reported during the incident, Lewis said.

Lewis said anyone planning a similar type of excursion to always advice someone where you are going and when you expect to return. You should also always carry:

▪  Compass or GPS

▪  Fully charged cell phone

▪  Whistle

▪  Appropriate Clothing

▪  Flashlight with extra batteries

▪  First-aid kit

▪  Food and water for an extra day
