Hundreds of family, friends, government officials and law enforcement officers gathered Friday in the Lexington County Courthouse to watch Jay Koon be sworn in as the first new sheriff elected in Lexington County in 43 years. He will serve through 2016. Koon was elected Tuesday. He succeeds Lewis McCarty, who was serving temporarily. McCarty replaced longtime incumbent James Metts, who will be sentenced Monday in federal court after pleading guilty to one federal felony charge of conspiring to harbor illegal immigrants.
