Female teen who died jumping off bridge onto Columbia highway identified by coroner
The 17-year-old female who died after jumping off a bridge over S.C. 277 was identified by Richland County Coroner Gary Watts Tuesday.
Destiny Crystal Cross jumped off the overpass on Westmore Drive around 6 p.m. Monday, according to Watts, who said the Columbia teen's death was a suicide.
Watts said Cross died at the scene from "blunt force trauma to the head as a result of the fall."
The incident caused traffic to come to a standstill on the interstate during the evening commute, and the Richland County Sheriff's Department tweeted that drivers should "Avoid 277 North near Farrow Road."
All northbound lanes of the highway were blocked and traffic was diverted as the road was shut down for about 90 minutes, according to the sheriff's department.
The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff's department.
