Funeral arrangements have been set for longtime WLTX sports broadcaster
Funeral arrangements have been set for longtime Columbia-area sports broadcaster Bob Shields, who died last week, The State reported.
The 59-year-old Shields died Dec. 28 after an 18-month battle with cancer, according to WLTX, where he served as sports director from 1983-2010.
The family of the Charleston native “will receive friends at St. Jacobs Lutheran Church” in Chapin from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, according to his obituary on Dignity Memorial.
The following day, at 11 a.m., a memorial service will be held at the church, the website reported.
Shields was placed in hospice care after undergoing “chemotherapy and radiation since a diagnosis of a cancerous tumor behind his eye,” The State previously reported.
Shields is survived by “his wife, Renee’ Ellisor Shields, son, Kevin and daughter, Gena,” according to Dignity Memorial.
During his years at WLTX, Shields established the popular Player of the Week series, The State previously reported. He won the South Carolina Broadcasters Association’s Sportscaster of the Year award from 1995-97, according to a 2010 news release from WLTX.
Instead of flowers, “memorials may be made to the St Jacob’s Lutheran Women and also to St. Jacob’s Lutheran Men’s groups,” according to Dignity Memorial.
