Crews searching around Gervais Street bridge after person reportedly jumped off

Traffic on the Gervais Street bridge was shut down Wednesday morning while crews searched for a person who was reported to have jumped off the bridge.

Both the Gervais Street and Blossom Street bridges have since reopened to traffic, the Columbia Fire Department said on Twitter just before noon.

Details are limited, but Assistant Chief Scott Morrison of the West Columbia Police Department said they received a call around 10:30 a.m. about someone jumping off the bridge.

Firefighters from Columbia, West Columbia and Cayce are assisting in the search of the Congaree River, Morrison said.

A helicopter from the S.C. Department of Natural Resources is assisting in the search, Morrison said.
