Despite what you might have read on social media, Columbia-area Fatz Southern Kitchen restaurants are not closing.

Those recent rumors might have stemmed from an upcoming change in ownership, which will mean a few changes at the popular Calabash-style fried chicken and seafood restaurants.

Some new, healthier options will be added to the Fatz menu in the next couple weeks, said Holly Smith, a spokesperson for the restaurant company. And over the next year or so, customers can expect to see their restaurants remodeled or updated, Smith said.

“We’re still the same Fatz that people have loved for the last 30 years,” Smith said. “It will be business as usual for the guest.”

Fatz Southern Kitchen has nearly 40 restaurants in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia, including three in the Columbia area: on East Main Street in Lexington, Broad River Road in Irmo and Forest Drive in Columbia.
