One person was killed and three others injured when two pickups crashed head on just north of Richland County on Tuesday, according to troopers.

The deadly crash happened just before 2 p.m. on U.S. 321, about two miles south of Winnsboro in Fairfield County, according to Trooper Joe Hovis of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

A GMC pickup was traveling north on U.S. 321 when a southbound Dodge pickup crashed into it head on, Hovis said. The driver of the GMC and a 17-year-old passenger were taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital with unknown injuries.

A 20-year-old passenger in the truck was entrapped and had to be mechanically extracted, Hovis said. That passenger died. The identity will be released by the Fairfield County Coroner’s Office after the next of kin is notified.

The driver of the Dodge pickup, a 53-year-old man, also was injured and taken to Prisma Health Richland, Hovis said. Charges against that driver are pending.
