Pleasant Hill Middle School evacuated due to gas leak

Students and staff have all reentered Pleasant Hill Middle School and are on a normal schedule after the school was evacuated on Thursday around 11:30 a.m. School officials reported an unusual smell, according to a tweet from the Lexington 1 school district.

Lexington County Fire Service responded to the school with Hazmat units and searched for the origin of the smell. The leak same from “a flexible supply line to an HVAC unit on the roof,” district 1 spokesperson Mary Beth Hill said. The smell of natural gas had “trickled into” the school building, Lexington County spokesperson Harrison Cahill said.

Just after noon, fire and maintenance crews “secured” the leak, according to a tweet from the County of Lexington. They cut off gas to the HVAC unit in order to repair the supply line, Hill said in a news release.
