A driver died after their SUV overturned multiple times in an early-morning crash in Orangeburg County, according to troopers.

The crash happened around 3 a.m. on North Road near Shillings Bridge Road, about 3 miles west of Orangeburg, according to Trooper 1st Class Tyler Tidwell of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

A 2002 Cadillac Escalade was traveling west on North Road when the SUV went off the right side of the roadway, where it hit an embankment and overturned several times, Tidwell said. The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg and then airlifted to Prisma Health Richland hospital in Columbia.

The driver died Sunday, Tidwell said. The identity will be released by the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office after the next of kin is notified.
