Infant twin dies in Columbia car crash, police say

A recently born twin was killed in a Friday wreck in Northeast Columbia, according to the Columbia Police Department.

The wreck was near the 2300 block of Percival Road, police said. The child “died from blunt force trauma due to not being properly restrained,” Coroner Gary Watts said.

The infant — one of two boys — was born in January.

The collision happened after a vehicle stopped for traffic. Another vehicle traveling behind the stopped car didn’t realize it was halted and swerved to avoid a wreck, according to police. The swerving vehicle’s passenger side hit the stopped vehicle, crossed into the opposing lane and hit another car head on.

The infant was in the car that was hit head on, reports said.

Five people were taken to a hospital.

The police report did not indicate the condition of the other people and did not say whether charges are being filed.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by Columbia Police Department.
