A 19-year-old man drowned while swimming with friends in a South Carolina lake that has had numerous deaths over the years, according to the coroner.

Angelo D. Hall, 19, of Greenville, died Monday night in the intensive care unit at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital, Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis said in a release Tuesday.

Hall was swimming with friends in Lake Keowee near Salem at Fall Creek Landing when he disappeared under the water, Addis said. His friends recovered him and initiated CPR.

Fire and EMS crews arrived and took Hall to Oconee Memorial Hospital before transporting him to Greenville, Addis said. He died at 8:45 p.m. Monday. Addis ruled the cause of death as complications associated with freshwater drowning.

Lake Keowee is one of the state’s deadliest lakes, with more than 32 people dying on the lake in the past 25 years, The Greenville News reported last year.
