One injured in Columbia junkyard blaze that filled sky with smoke, fire dept. says
The Columbia Fire Department battled a blaze Tuesday that filled the sky with smoke at an area junkyard.
The fire broke out at about 8 a.m. at the American Recycling & Parts on Fairfield Road, the fire department said on its Twitter feed.
Because of the blaze, the 7700 block of Fairfield Road is closed, and drivers should avoid the area. That is near the intersection with Interstate 20.
One person was injured and the flames caused damage, according to the fire department. The person was taken to an area hospital because of smoke inhalation, the fire department tweeted.
Further information on the person’s condition was not available.
Multiple vehicles were damaged by the blaze, producing lots of smoke, the fire department tweeted. There was no word on the full extent of the property destroyed.
Crews got the burning under control from above, using a number of ladder trucks to douse the flames, according to the tweet.
The fire department said the blaze was under control around 10 a.m., and extinguished at about 11:45 a.m.
Information on the cause of the fire was not available.
A fire was reported at the junkyard in April 2019 that shut down the area for hours, WLTX reported.
