Two people are dead after a head-on collision on a Midlands road, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Sunday.

The collision happened around 10 p.m. Friday night on Bass Drive (U.S. 15) near Friendship Road in Santee, Lance Cpl. Matt Southern said. That is about 60 miles south of Columbia.

The driver of a 2005 Toyota Camry tried to pass another vehicle and crashed head-on into a third vehicle, a 2001 Toyota Camry, Southern said.

The drivers of both cars were killed in the wreck, Southern said.

Holly Hill resident Josephine Walker, 75, and Charleston’s Warren J. Bennett, Jr., 76, were identified as the drivers killed, Orangeburg County Chief Deputy Coroner Sean Fogle said.

Both were wearing seat belts and were the only occupants in their vehicles, Southern said.

No other injuries were reported.

The collision is being investigated by Highway Patrol.
