Pelion bans tobacco use in park, buildings
Pelion is snuffing out smoking and chewing tobacco in its park, public buildings and town vehicles.
Officials adopted the restriction after parents complained about smoke threatening the health of children playing in the park, Mayor Barbara Smith said Friday.
In addition, discarded butts and chews were becoming a litter problem, she said.
Signs noting the ban will be going up where the practice is barred.
Police officers will issue warnings initially to persons who light up or chew in the wrong areas.
Violations eventually could lead to a fine of as much as $500 in town court.
The town of 700 residents is the latest Lexington County community with tobacco use limits, although it’s not as far-reaching as others.
It’s still up to businesses there to decide if customers can smoke and chew inside.
