Man crashes, dies after having heart attack while driving on Midlands highway

A 73-year-old Philadelphia man was driving south through Columbia when he had a heart attack, crashed his vehicle and died, according to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.

Paul Ivy Edwards Jr. died of cardiac arrest at 12:43 p.m. Friday, Watts said.

Edwards was traveling on Interstate 77 near mile marker 19 just before noon when he suffered a heart attack and veered off the highway, according to Watts. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Edwards was taken to Prisma Health Richland Hospital, where he died soon after.
