Columbia’s Army footprint expanding with new training school coming to Fort Jackson

Fort Jackson is getting a new training mission and school.

The Army is transferring the Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Advanced Individual Training Courses from Fort Bragg, N.C., to the Columbia post.

“The relocation better aligns this critical training to a United States Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) environment on the same installation where these students attended basic training,” the Army said in a news release.

Equipment and personnel will begin arriving this month, and the first classes will begin in late March.

The move from Fort Bragg’s Special Warfare Center and School will bring 23 permanent trainers. About 300 soldiers annually will attend the school over eight 10-week courses.

The new company will be aligned to the United States Army Soldier Support Institute’s existing Advanced Individual Training Battalion.

“We’ve developed a great partnership with the Special Warfare Center and School and look forward to integrating this new team as we set conditions for rigorous and realistic training of this unique skill set on Fort Jackson,” Soldier Support Institute Commander Col. Steve Aiton said in the release.

Fort Jackson is the nation’s largest Army basic training post. It trains about 45,000 recruits in basic training each year and another 24,000 soldiers in advanced training courses.
