Body found on I-77. SC Highway Patrol asks for help finding hit-and-run driver

Troopers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol found a man who later died on Interstate 77 near Forest Acres early Saturday morning and are looking for the driver who caused the death.

Authorities found the body near the southbound lane of the interstate close to exit 12, which leads to Forest Drive near Fort Jackson.

The man was identified as Nelson Vicente Felipe, by Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.

Trooper Tyler Tidwell said the pedestrian was hit about 5:30 a.m. and the driver fled.

Felipe, 24, was taken to an area hospital where he died, Watts said.

Troopers don’t know the make or model of the vehicle that killed the pedestrian but believe the vehicle may have damage to one headlight, Tidwell said in a statement. The vehicle was last known to be headed south on I-77.

Anyone with information is asked to call the South Carolina Department of Public Safety at 803-896-9621, or report it to CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.
