In memory of Faye Swetlik, here is one way to donate to children in need
After mourners brought stuffed animals and toys to Faye Swetlik’s family, her grandmother brought them to Prisma Health Children’s Hospital.
Now, the hospital is issuing guidelines for anyone who would like to donate in Faye’s memory.
Swetlik, 6, was killed last week after last being seen playing in her front yard in Churchill Heights in Cayce on Feb. 10, according to previous articles from The State. Police say she was abducted and killed by a neighbor.
“People are looking for meaningful ways to help and this is one of those ways,” said Christine Fink, who oversees the welfare of patients in the children’s hospital.
Donors often give stuffed animals and toys, but what the hospital really needs are pajamas and underwear, especially for children of middle school or high school age, Fink said at a Wednesday news conference.
“They get tired of hospital gowns pretty quickly,” Fink said.
When children have toys, decorations and other materials to take their minds off treatment, they tend to get better faster, Fink said.
“It helps them feel like they have some semblance of normalcy here,” Fink said.
Because children in the hospital have compromised immune systems, it’s important that donors only drop off new, clean items, Fink said.
Those who want to donate can call 803-296-KIDS (5437) or email Fink at Christine.Fink@PrismaHealth.org.
